Do Not Say...

I really liked the story and characters and it was very informative about Chinese modern history, especially from the eye of one family over more than three generations. I loved her metaphors and emotional descriptions of Zhuli, a young violinist whose parents are criminalized politically. However I found it hard sometimes to keep the rhythm  of my reading. So many different tones are acquired for this 450 page long novel, and if you're not careful, you can get lost pretty easily, not in a way you're absorbed but you're confused with the information given. The story had a lot of repetition of themes and many events felt stretched out for no reason. One thing I can think of is that this book focuses on the lengthy process of so called 'revolution' and how people repeat the same kind of mistakes through the course of their history, so the author might be trying to create such feeling by writing in this style, or she simply didn't have a good editor?
I enjoyed the most part of the book. I'd be able to enjoy it more if I know more about classical music and Chinese history for sure. I wonder if it's translated into Japanese already or not.
The story made me really think about how people cope with the past without keeping records(written). There's been an increase number of research done on oral history, and that's another way to record the past, and personally I think that'd  be more powerful way of preserving the past or giving a caution to the successive generations. This theme reminded me of Ishiguro's Buried Giant; in a fog, people forget everything. I love writing so the idea that I can't keep records of my own thought or ideas, or i can't learn about the past of the community I live really troubles me.
Anyways, it was a thought provoking book for sure. It requires a lot of your energy to read through but I think it was worth it.
